Newfie Mitts Pattern

Here is a pattern for Newfie Mitts!


Needles: double pointed 3.25mm   Yarn: worsted weight yarn (two colours)


***Always make sure to place the yarn you aren't knitting with behind the yarn you are knitting with to avoid a random string going over your pattern!*** 

- You may want to add another row for larger hands before you place the thumb!

NEWFIE MITTENS
Cast on 42 stitches, 3 needles for cuffs, Knit 1, Purl l for 3" cuffs.
A= wrist color. B =contrast color

After 3", purl 1 row. Next purl row increase 2 st. on each needle (48 stitches)

PATTERN 1 : Knit 4 st. of color B. Slip 2 st. of color A from behind. Repeat for 5 rounds in all. Purl 2 rounds in colour A.

PATTERN 2: Knit 1 of B. Slip 2 sts. of A (Knit 4 B, Slip 2 sts. of A)**Continue these in brackets to finish row. These make one row and do this again 4 more times to make 5 rows. Purl 2 rounds in colour A.

When you start your next purl row, purl 2 sts. and take 8 sts. off. Put on a pin for thumb, and then cast on 8 stitches.

Make 7 more patterns ending with 2 purl rounds. Narrow off with A color, same as the wrist.

Knit 1 row. Next row, knit 4, knit 2 tog. around all needles.
Knit 1 row
Knit 3, knit 2 tog all around - knit 2 rows 
Knit 2, knit 2 tog all around - knit 1 row
Knit 1, Knit 2 tog all around - knit 1 row 

Knit 2 tog all around *
Draw yarn through remaining sts

*(on my last pair I knit an extra round and then Knit 2 tog all around)

THUMB; Pick up 4 stitches on one needle, 4 on another needle and the 8 sts. off holder. Knit 1 row then divide the sts evenly on the needles. Knit desired length. Knit 1, knit 2 tog. Knit 1 row.
knit 1, knit 2 tog. Draw the yarn through the remaining stitches and darn in ends.

BABY MITTENS; 30 sts. add 2 more on each needle
after finishing the cuff and you start to purl.
Pattern the same. Take off 6 sts. for the thumb
(instead of 8) Use 6 picked up for the thumb, make 3 or 4 patterns Narrow same way.
